Recycled paper of all types are used in an adapted form of an ancient basket building technique. Discarded seed catalogs, phone books, maps, and other paper materials are good sources for making these hand formed vessels. Once the piece has been stabilized in its shape, embellishments such as beads or ribbons are added for a colorful and eco-friendly object d’art.

I like playing with paper, scissors, earth materials, and color. I make practical items out of materials that have outlived their original intent.

Hand-coiled recycled paper bowls
I have taken a more direct approach to using and reusing paper for the hand-coiled recycled paper bowls. I call it re-purposing. Many of us receive "mail" that is mostly advertisements, catalogs, brochures, newspapers and magazines, etc.

I knew I had to do something with all that "junk". Hence, my recycled hand-coiled paper bowls. With these paper materials I make vessels of differing shapes and sizes that can be used to store, hold or display anything dry from buttons to rose petals to serving popcorn and nuts.

My construction starts with a simple fold of the paper, then an ancient coiling technique that is still used by many world cultures. After the paper is coiled, I shape the bowl. Depending upon how the colors show-up in the shaped piece (this is where the art and creativity comes in) I decide on the texture, shape and color of embellishments.

In my small way, I hope for every vessel I make, I keep some paper from landing in a landfill.
